Forrest County Supervisors take jail proposal under advisement

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The Forrest County Board of Supervisors received another proposal to purchase the old county jail in downtown Hattiesburg Thursday.

Hattiesburg Real Estate Agent Chris Price went before the board representing H & H Land Company with two proposals. The first proposal was for $235,000 to purchase the jail and the old women's jail. The second bid of $365,000 included the adjacent Carpenters Building that currently houses the counties schools administrative offices.

After meeting with the group, the board made the decision to take the proposal under advisement so both sides can work out some of the parameters that they have issues with.

"There are two or three items that both sides have some concern about," said David Hogan, Board President. I don't want to go into details at this time. We are going to be working with the real estate agent that they have employed to represent them to see if we can't get the sticking points worked out."

During the meeting the decision was made to take the Carpenters Building out of the equation and invest the money needed to make necessary repairs to the building.

"The offer for the jail is a little low in our opinion," said Hogan. Depending on what exactly they are going to do with the property we're less concerned about the purchase price then we are about the money being invested and becoming a tax revenue source for the county."

Price told the board the property would be a mixed use development with some retail, residential and professional office space.
