A young Jones County man was killed in a head-on collision near the Jeff Byrd Road intersection of Highway 84 East in Jones County on Wednesday night.

At 9:37 p.m., medical first responders and rescue units from M&M, Powers and Glade Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the accident where the male driver of a Ford F-150 had been traveling in the wrong direction of the eastbound lane of Highway 84 East. The driver collided head-on with a Toyota Corolla driven by 20-year old John Michael Aricer.

Aricer was pronounced dead at the scene by Jones County Deputy Coroner Earnest Hollingsworth.

The Jaws-of-Life had to be used by volunteer rescue personnel to remove both men from their tangled vehicles. The male driver of the Ford F-150 was transported to South Central Regional Medical Center by EMServ Ambulance Service with what was believed to be serious injuries.

According to M&M VFD Fire Chief Steve Ishee, who served as incident commander, additional injuries and possible lives lost could have occurred, due to the fact that a Wayne County church bus transporting several youth members witnessed the accident and barely escaped being involved.

The accident is under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Also responding to the accident were Jones County Sheriff's Department, Jones County Fire Council Medical First Responder Coordinator Lee Garick and Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna.
