Purvis tourist detained in Turkey over artifacts

Posted: Updated:

According to an email sent by Jason Dement on Thursday, the investigative report on stones he took as souvenirs had been completed, and it has been determined that they could be from the Roman Era.

Dement states that the stones are now considered historical artifacts and his case must go to the Criminal High Court, where most serious cases in Turkey go.

Dement is now waiting for a court date, which can take up to two weeks.

Dement is detained in Ankara, Turkey, for attempting to smuggle historical artifacts.

According to a blog written by Dement, he and his wife picked up stones from their hotel beach to add to their souvenir collection. On the day of their departure to Germany, Dement was taken into custody by security officials at the airport because two of his stones appeared to be artifacts.

Dement is under a travel ban, and if charged, can face a minimum of 5 years to a maximum of 12 years in prison.
