Laurel to build new sidewalks leading towards schools

Students who walk back and forth to school in Laurel will soon have a safer means of getting there.

On Wednesday, the city held a groundbreaking for the first phase of its Safe Routes to School Project. City officials along with the Mississippi Department of Transportation and other community leaders were on hand for the celebration. The city received $178,000 to build five foot wide side walks near Laurel Middle School and Maddox Elementary. Councilwoman Willie Evans said the sidewalks will run along Ferrill Street, Oak Hill Drive, 19th Avenue, General Perishing Street, 17th Avenue, Woodlawn Street, and Popular Drive.
