FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

More than 300 employees with District 6 of the Mississippi Department of Transportation volunteered Tuesday to pick up trash along 100 miles of highway in Forrest and Lamar counties.

It was all part of MDOT's annual Trash Bash. During Trash Bash 2012 in Hancock County, about 270 employees picked up more than 700 bags of litter.

It's the department's contribution to the Great American Clean Up.

"It's a problem all over the state, not just in Forrest and Lamar County, but all over the state," said Tom King, southern district transportation commissioner. "We encourage all our citizens to keep that in mind before you roll the window down and throw out some trash. Let's all work together on the litter problem we have in the State of Mississippi," he said.

District 6 is the first in the state this year to take part in the program.
