Price named Laurel Varsity Boys’ Basketball Head Coach

With nearly a lifetime of basketball experience, Marcus R. Price has been selected as Laurel High School’s new boys’ basketball coach. Growing up a coach’s son, Price has been exposed to the game nearly his entire life. Writing scouting reports and watching hours of game film at an early age instilled in him an in-depth knowledge of the game.

"We are absolutely thrilled to have Marcus Price as the new men's basketball coach for the Laurel Tornadoes,” said Superintendent Dr. Chuck Benigno. “Coach Price brings a passion and energy that I know our players and fans will truly appreciate. Most importantly, Marcus understands the importance of developing not only great basketball players, but also great young men.”

Price began his career with Laurel in 2007 as assistant varsity coach and head ninth grade boys’ coach. During this time the ninth grade team won five consecutive championships, the varsity team won two consecutive South State Championships, and had two consecutive MHSAA State Basketball Final Four appearances.

Prior to working in Laurel, Price was assistant girls’ basketball coach at Jim Hill High School in Jackson from 2004-07 and worked with Beijing Management Group in Beijing, China from 2000-01. During his time in China, Price played point guard for the American Storm touring team and coached for the Beijing Aeosean Junior Team.

Prior to his professional career, Price played at Union University from 1997-99, University of Southern Mississippi from 1995-96, Jones County Junior College from 1994-95, Colorado State University from 1993-94 and South Jones High School from 1990-93.

Price received a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and physical education from Union University, a Masters of Business Administration from Belhaven College and is currently an educational leadership doctoral candidate at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Price will begin his duties as head coach at the start of the new school year.

“Laurel High School is on the cusp of becoming a basketball powerhouse with our back to back South State Championships and a core of players that are the most talented we have seen in many years,” Benigno said. “I am extremely confident that Marcus Price is the man to take our program to the next level.”
