Deer Island campers trapped by overnight storm

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

New details have emerged about what was supposed to be an exciting overnight camping adventure on Deer Island.

WLOX News just heard from a Department of Marine Resources spokesperson.  She tells us that seven adults and seven children between the ages of 8-13 rode out the Sunday morning storm on the southeast end of Deer Island.

By mid-morning, the DMR's Marine Patrol division helped those campers sail back to shore and seek medical attention.  At least 11 people were taken to area hospitals to be treated for hypothermia.  We're told by an AMR spokesman at least three others refused medical treatment.

Four children and one adults were transported to Biloxi Regional Medical Center. They have been treated and released.  We're told by a Singing River Hospital System spokesman three other kids and three adults went to Ocean Springs Hospital.  They were cold and wet and suffering from hypothermia.  But, according to the DMR spokesman, none of their injuries were considered life threatening.

Authorities have been told the campers didn't have foul weather gear.  So, when a beautiful Saturday turned into a threatening Sunday, the DMR spokesperson says two adults jumped in a skiff and sailed back to Biloxi.  The other campers remained on Deer Island and got trapped by the heavy rain and lightning storm.
