Restaurant offers free food for concealed carry holders

BOSSIER CITY, LA (KSLA) -

Fried chicken was more than a meal on Saturday for supporters of gun rights at one Bossier City restaurant.

As the gun control discussion gets under way in the Louisiana legislature, one Bossier City chicken restaurant is joining the conversation in an unconventional way.

Chicken Express offered free #1 combo meals for concealed handgun permit holders.

Owner Randal Neel says it's probably the busiest Saturday they've ever had.

But it's not just about business. Neel says it's his way of taking a stand as a gun rights advocate, and making a statement as the Louisiana legislature considers more than a dozen bills that have been filed dealing with gun regulations. "It feels really good to be able to stand up for what you believe in."

Concealed permit holder Ronnie Corbi was happy to take advantage of the deal, while taking a stand for guns and against crime at the same time. "Until criminals and crooks know there is someone that can fight back, they can do whatever they want."

Most of the bills being debated in the Louisiana Legislature are pro-gun. Only a few would tighten regulations. For instance, one bill looks to bar people with certain mental health issues from buying guns. Another would require you to take a training class before buying a gun.

Rep. Barbara Norton (D - Shreveport) wants it make it a crime to leave a firearm unlocked, and Rep. Austin Badon (D - New Orleans) wants to create stiffer punishments for illegal gun sales.

Gun control advocates say better regulation is key to reducing violence in Louisiana, while those who oppose stricter regulations say guns are not the issue.
