Hattiesburg tornado debris cleanup coming to an end

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Tornado debris cleanup by Hattiesburg city workers is close to coming to an end.

The original date to discontinue cleanup by the city was Monday April, 15. With much cleanup still to be done, Mayor Johnny Dupree requested a two week extension to the deadline from FEMA and MEMA and it was approved. Dupree is urging residents to get their debris to the road before the deadline expires. After that it will be up to the residents to dispose of their debris. The last day for pick is now Monday, April 29.

Thus far crews have picked up about 25,000 cubic yards at a cost to the city of about $500,000. Dupree says the reason for the deadline is because FEMA will reimburse the city for the first 60-days after cleanup has begun.

The city of Petal wrapped up their debris cleanup efforts on March, 22. The cleanup cost the city about $100,000.

In Lamar County debris cleanup will continue until May, 2. To date, county crews have picked up about 35,000 cubic yards of vegetative debris and more than 1,500 tons of construction debris.
