Public gets input on Country Club Rd. re-design

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A public information session for the re-design charette of Country Club Rd. in Hattiesburg was held Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

The session gave business owners and residents on Country Club Rd. the opportunity to meet with designers and planners developing what the street will look like in the future.

The purpose of a charette is to create streets that enable more transportation choices and a better balance between the needs of vehicles and the needs of the people and businesses in the neighborhood.

With the city putting in new sewer lines, it gave them the opportunity to make overdue major improvements to the area.

We're not just building a roadway for cars, we're also thinking about people who ride bicycles, pedestrians" said Burt Kuyrkendall, Hattiesburg City Engineer. "It's right next to a park, it borders a neighborhood, and there are three churches here. It's crucial we not look as the rode as a place for cars, but look at the street as an amenity in the neighborhood."

Designers now have a week to put together a plan to present to residents. That plan will be laid out Tuesday, April 16 at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, located at 1313 Country Club Rd.
