FLOWOOD, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Saturday the Flowood Police Department and Metro One, along with a K-9 unit searched for what is described as a suspicious person.

Flowood Police dispatch got the call around 6 p.m. Saturday evening.

According to Flowood Police Chief Johnny Dewitt, the call was about a suspicious man on Old Brandon Road in Flowood. The location is east of Jefferson Street, located in Jackson, just across the Pearl River bridge.

Dewitt said the man, described as an African American with a slim build was in possession of a bike when police arrived on the scene. The man was wearing a dark flannel shirt, shorts and no shoes.

Chief Dewitt said when officers approached the man he ran into the woods.

"We don't know why he ran. We don't know if he's homeless or on the run. Alot of times people run because they've committed a crime and they don't want to be apprehended," Dewitt said.

"He could be mentally handicapped or have committed a crime; either way we want to speak with him," Dewitt added.

"If he's mentally handicapped we want to get him some help, but if he's committed a crime we've got to deal with that," Dewitt explained.

Authorities are asking if anyone has seen a person matching the description to call the Flowood Police Department.

Dewitt added all surrounding law enforcement agencies have been alerted.
