Two-Run Third Lifts Tulane over Southern Miss 3-2 in C-USA Action

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Tony Rizzotti and Ian Gibaut limited Southern Miss to four hits as Tulane captured the Conference USA series opener over the Golden Eagles 3-2 here Friday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.

The loss dropped the Golden Eagles to 11-17 overall and 3-4 in C-USA, while the Green Wave improved to 16-16, 4-3.

Tim Lynch led the Golden Eagles by driving in both of their runs and Mason Robbins added two hits to extend his hitting streak to eight games.

The Green Wave, though, struck early for the game's first run in the opening frame. The visitors collected four singles and a walk in the top of the first, but managed just a single run on a RBI single from Brandon Boudreaux. Tulane had the opportunity to score more runs but Richard Carthon, the Green Wave's leadoff hitter, got picked off of first base and Blake Crohan was thrown out by Breck Kline at the plate to end the inning.

Lynch tied the game up in the bottom of the stanza on a RBI fielder's choice, but Tulane took the lead for good with two runs in the third on a RBI single by Sean Potkay and a sacrifice fly by Garrett Cannizaro.

A run-scoring single by Lynch in the bottom of third capped the game's scoring.

Southern Miss reliever Jay Myrick came in to limit the damage in the third with one out in the third and the bases loaded. Myrick, who fanned four and allowed just two hits over 5 2/3 innings, got Crohan to ground into a double play to get out of the jam and end Tulane's last biggest scoring threat of the contest.

Myrick came in for Jake Drehoff (1-4) who got tagged for three runs on nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings to suffer the loss.

Southern Miss threatened offensively once last time in the eighth. Isaac Rodriguez led of the eighth with a walk against Tulane reliever Ian Gibaut before Robbins collected an infield single.

Michael Sterling then pinch hit and tried to get out of the way of pitch that he was attempting to bunt. The ball hit the bat and stayed in play and the Green Wave was able to turn a double play and end the rally.

Tony Rizzotti (5-3) gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walk s with five strikeouts to garner the victory while Gibaut allowed a hit and a walk , while fanning two to earn his seventh save.

The two teams continue the series with a 2 p.m., contest Saturday. Prior to the game, the 2003 Southern Miss team will be recognized as that squad celebrates its 10-year anniversary. That year's edition of the Golden Eagles won the C-USA regular season and tournament titles as well as hosted the school's only NCAA Baseball Regional and won a school-record 47 games.
