PURVIS, MS (WDAM) -

Dozens of Lamar County residents packed the courtroom of the Lamar County Circuit Courthouse Thursday to re-dedicate that 108-year-old building after a $4.5 million restoration.

The work included the re-opening of a courtroom balcony, the rebuilding of a west side stairway and the reconstruction of a clock tower that was destroyed in a fire in 1934.

Mississippi Supreme Court Justice Mike Randolph gave the keynote address for the event.

"The renovation of the building is exciting and I was just encouraging the people who use it to re-dedicate themselves, rather than the building, to a good life of public service," Randolph said.

"As far as the integrity of the old building, I think it's here and especially when you walk in to this courtroom, it is a thing to behold, for sure," said Phillip Carlisle, Dist. 4 Lamar County supervisor. "I think anybody that is here today or anybody that comes down and sees it will see that the money was well spent," he said.

The renovation began 15 months ago.
