    Four suspects were arrested Thursday during an attempt to commit a crime at the South Mississippi Correctional Institution. HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Thousands of dollars were donated to a local community foundation on Wednesday.

Due to the damaged caused by the February 10 tornado, The First decided to support the long term recovery efforts of the Hattiesburg area, and donated $30,000 to The Greater PineBelt Community Foundation's Disaster Fund.

"I'd like to challenge other corporate members in the Hattiesburg community to also support various organizations that are working to make sure we get full recovery in the Hattiesburg area," said President and CEO of The First, Hoppy Cole.

Since R3SM and The Carpenter's Helper have been directly involved in supporting many unmet needs since Hurricane Katrina, $15,000 will be given to each to continue their mission to help restore and rebuild the community.

"It means a lot because we as a long term recovery agency," said R3SM Executive Director, Sheila Varnado. "We're out now working with families who were impacted by the tornado and perhaps do not have enough to recover on their own. We know that the community is going to have to step in and help, and so we are appreciative that The First understands that and that they're one of the first to come in and make the donation.

The Greater PineBelt Community Foundation has received more than $130,000 towards their disaster fund to help with unmet needs.
