Arizona Cardinals trade for Raiders' QB Palmer

TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

Less than a day after giving quarterback John Skelton his walking paper, the Arizona Cardinals acquired quarterback Carson Palmer from the Oakland Raiders for draft picks.

The Cardinals were scheduled to introduce Palmer at 2 p.m. at the team's training headquarters in Tempe.

Arizona swapped their sixth-round draft pick this year for Oakland's seventh-round pick, and also gave the Raiders a conditional 2014 draft pick.

Palmer agreed to a two-year deal worth up to $20 million, half of which is guaranteed.

Palmer became expendable after the Raiders signed Seattle backup QB Matt Flynn on Monday.

The 33-year-old Palmer spent the past two seasons in Oakland after playing seven seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Last season, Palmer became just the second Raiders' quarterback to pass for more than 4,000 yards (4,018 in 15 games).

Rich Gannon passed for a Raiders' record 4,689 yards in 2002 when he won the league's MVP.

Palmer's 345 completions were the third-most in Oakland history and passer rating of 85.3 was the fourth-best mark of his career and highest since 2007.

The 2002 Heisman Trophy winner while at the University of Southern California, Palmer started 24 games for Oakland over two seasons.

According to the Cardinals, among active NFL quarterbacks Palmer ranks sixth in career pass attempts (4,110) and completions (2,568) while ranking seventh in both career passing yards (29,465) and TD passes (189).

He has directed 20 career game-winning drives, including 13 fourth-quarter comebacks. Palmer has thrown for more than 300 yards in a game 27 times, including five career outings with more than 400 passing yards.
