7-year-old dies in Walthall Co. accident

WALTHALL COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

We new information on the Walthall county crash that killed a child Saturday.

Walthall County Coroner Shannon Hartzog has identified the victim as 7-year-old Jalea Smith of Jayess.

The coroner said the child was not wearing a safety belt and was in the front seat of her father's vehicle.

According to investigators, the accident occurred around 12:35p.m. while her father, Joe Smith, was traveling on Enon Sartinville Road in the county.

Smith lost control and entered the opposite lane of traffic where another vehicle crashed into the passenger's side where Jalea was seated.

According to Deputy Shirley Harris of the Walthall County Sheriff's Department, Smith was transported to Southwest Medical Center in McComb and released Saturday.

Deputy Harris said a second daughter, unnamed, was in the vehicle when the crash occurred, but she was unharmed.

The Walthall County Sheriff's Department is investigating the crash.
