HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A Southern Miss organization has honored a Hattiesburg civil rights pioneer by naming an award after her. The Committee on Services and Resources for Women has named their research award in honor of Peggy Jean Connor.

She was state executive secretary of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and former treasurer of the COFO-Hattiesburg Project.

Connor was recognized during an annual awards luncheon at the Thad Cochran Center Thursday.

"I'm very thankful," Connor said. "I never thought anybody would think that way of me. I'm just humbled," she said.

"Countless times, I've called on her and other professors have called on her to come and speak about her experience during the civil rights movement," said Sherita Johnson, professor of English at USM.

The luncheon was part of USM's recognition of Women's History Month.
