PCSO: Deputy catches auto thieves in action

FLORENCE, AZ (CBS5) -

Two people were arrested Monday on suspicion of car theft in the area of San Manuel Junction, Pinal County sheriff's deputies said.

Vincent Chavez, 36, and Jonathan Altland, 17, of Oracle, had outstanding warrants from Pima County and were arrested for those warrants. They also face other charges, including auto theft and burglary.

A deputy patrolling an area experiencing an uptick in car burglaries observed a vehicle pull into a parking lot and alongside a parked pickup truck, PCSO said. 

As the deputy approached the two vehicles, he overheard one man yell to the other, "Get down, someone is coming," according to authorities. 

The deputy said he found Altland inside the parked pickup and observed the ignition had been punched. Altland was wearing gloves and had a screwdriver near his side, PCSO said.

The deputy learned the vehicle Chavez was in had been stolen earlier from Pima County. After arresting the two men, deputies said they discovered a small amount of methamphetamine in the pocket of the juvenile.

During questioning, Chavez said that he was a drug dealer but he was not a car thief and thought he was taking Altland, his neighbor, to pick up a family member's truck.

PCSO deputies will now compare fingerprints of the suspects to prints taken from other burglaries in the area.
