Several Stone County seized dogs sent to Florida shelters for rehab

Several of the dogs seized in last weeks hoarding case in Stone County are on their way to shelters in Florida.

The Southern Pines Animal Shelter took in more than 40 of the seized dogs putting a strain on the facility and staff. In order to relieve some of the strain, The Human Society of the United States arranged for transport of around 50-dogs made up of some of the hoarded dogs and others at the shelter.

They will be going to the Humane Society of Sarasota  and to Peggy Adams Rescue League  in West Palm Beach. The hoarded dogs will be going to the Rescue League to continue their rehabilitation.

"We're a small shelter, we have limited staff and we have so many animals to care for," said Katherine Sammons, SPAS Operations Manager. "That rehab facility is able to spend intensive hours and hours a day with each dog to help re-socialize them."

Sammons says all the dogs are progressing well. Several will remain at Southern Pines and will be put up for adoption when they ready to go to a new home.

A three-legged dog named Tripod was found to be in good health and heart worm free when he was examined. He has already been put up for adoption.
