HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -
Hattiesburg residents met with city planners and engineers Tuesday night to help come up with ways to improve the Hardy Street corridor as part of an updated land development code. A community design session at Hardy Street Baptist Church gave residents and business owners a chance to submit their ideas for enhancing or revitalizing streets and neighborhoods from Highway 49 to downtown.
The goals are to improve the appearance of the area and commercial development by focusing on the transportation system.
"We're more focused on re-development and how to retrofit the corridor for maximum community benefit, in terms of both aesthetics and economics," said Bob Barber, of Orion Planning Group.
"We're looking at Hardy Street, will it be a complete street, that's our goal, is that it will accommodate cars and bicycles and pedestrian and transit also," said Bert Kuyrkendall, director of engineering for the City of Hattiesburg.
A final presentation of the concept will come Thursday night at the church activity center.
