Pine Belt Family Y gets $34,000 donation

The Pine Belt Family Y was the recipient Tuesday of a $34,000 donation.

The money comes from the Alex Katrishin Endowment to the Y through the Greater Pine Belt Community Foundation.

The endowment was established shortly before Katrishin's death in 2000. He was a disabled World War 11 veteran who spent time living in a California YMCA. He moved to Hattiesburg when he was in his 60's and spent a considerable time at the Y exercising and taking part in physical therapy.

Katrishin was a very frugal man and through the years he was able to amass a small fortune. Upon his death the bulk of his estate was left to The Family Y of South Mississippi.

"It means an awful lot to us to get the Alex Katrishin fund. It's a situation where someone who loved the Y so much that he gave back to them," said Willie Macko, Pine Belt Family Y, Board President. "We look forward to the donation every year to help us continue the projects that we do."

Through the years the Y has received around $450,000 from the endowment.
