PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A man accused of beating and raping a woman in Tempe three days after he was released from prison has died while in custody.

Lane Halona, 23, was found unresponsive in his Lower Buckeye Jail cell by deputies after his arrest about 4:15 p.m. Saturday, according to a statement from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies and Phoenix firefighters attempted CPR but Halona was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital.

Halona was accused of grabbing, beating and raping a woman walking home from work near Mill Avenue on March 17.

Officers said they later found him curled up on the ground, wrapped in the woman's jacket.

Halona was charged with two counts of sexual assault, aggravated assault and kidnapping. He had previously been in prison serving a 23-month sentence for aggravated assault and DUI.

The statement said the incident was being investigated as a suicide.
