BRUNSWICK, GA (WJXT/CNN) - Police say they have arrested two teens, 17- and 14-years-old, in connection with Thursday morning's shooting of a mother and her toddler in Brunswick, GA.
Thirteen-month-old Antonio Santiago was killed. The mother was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Friday afternoon, Brunswick Police Chief Tobe Green said Demarquis Elkins and the unnamed 14-year-old were arrested Friday morning on a charge of murder.
Green said investigators are still unsure of the motive for the shooting and have not found the gun used, but that three search warrants were being served Friday afternoon in connection with the case.
The search is on for young suspects in the shooting of a mother and her baby in the small, coastal community of Brunswick, GA.
Police say the baby was killed while riding in a stroller Thursday morning.
The mother was also shot in the leg and said her baby was shot during a robbery attempt by a couple of kids.
Sherry West said she was walking her child in his stroller just yards from their home at about 9 a.m.
"Two boys approached me. Two African American boys. One of them was about 15," West said. "He said, 'I'm going to kill you if you don't give me money,' and I said, 'I swear I don't have any.'"
She said the other boy appeared younger than 10-years-old. The older one pointed a handgun.
The baby's father, Louis Santiago, said he wishes he could have been there to protect his family.
"He was special. He had the bluest, bluest eyes," Santiago said.
"I put my arms over my baby and he shoves me and then he shot my baby right in the head," West said.
West said she began CPR on her baby's lifeless body while wondering to herself how a couple of boys could get their hands on a real gun.
"But when I saw him shoot my baby and he died, I knew it was real," said West.
It's not known if the mother and child were the intended targets.
The city's website describes Brunswick, with a population of about 15,000, as "one of the most unique, historic and visually stunning places in the world."
