JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Baseball size hail pounded central Mississippi this week leaving holes in the windows of many cars. Some Jackson inventors say some of the damage could have been prevented with the Weather Hail Dome.

"If they would have had this on Monday their cars would not be damaged," said Weather Hail Dome Part-Owner Hal Bronson.

He says the inflatable and durable plastic cover has been tested by dropping large pieces of ice off a building and by using golf and tennis balls shot at the dome at 80 miles per hour. Bronson says it can repel up to softball size hail.

"Yes it will, because by bouncing off of there when it hits it's gonna repel it off. So it will not damage your car," explained Bronson.

Straps are thrown under the car and connected to keep the hail dome on in the case of high winds.

An air pump is plugged into the DC power connector to inflate the dome, which takes three to four minutes. Bronson says the Weather Hail Dome is good for 10 to 15 years.

A patent is pending for the Weather Hail Dome. Bronson says it has other uses even protecting against UV rays.

"It's also gonna be made for a tent. It will come in camouflage. It basically stands up on its own. So you can use it for an outing or a parking garage if you want to," Bronson said.

He says one person can inflate the dome, but he recommends two. The dome can be custom made to fit larger trucks and SUV's. Eventually they want to make Weather Hail Domes large enough to go over airplanes.

The inventors hope to have it on store shelves soon. The dome will sell for about $400.
