A three-time Super Bowl-winning head coach is headed to the Hub City. Bill Belichick, the head coach of the New England Patriots, will stop by the Lake Terrace Convention Center on Tuesday, March 26 for "An Evening with Bill Belichick.
The event, sponsored by Jones County Junior College, begins at 6:00 pm and costs $150 for individual tickets.
Belichick's career in the NFL began in 1975 as an assistant, but may have been jump started thanks to Ray Perkins. The JCJC head football coach, and former head coach of the New York Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, hired Belichick to his staff in New York in 1979.
"I hired him to be our special teams coach, and then it wasn't long after that that he branched out and started coaching some of the linebackers, helping (Bill) Parcells out on the defensive side of the ball," said Perkins, "One thing lead to another, and we all know what's happened since then."
Belichick lead the Patriots to the 2001 Super Bowl title over the St. Louis Rams, then won two more against the Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles respectively in 2003 and 2004. His 17-0 team came up just short against the New York Giants 2008, and the Pats would lose again to the Giants in the big one four years later.
Perkins and Belichick have kept a relationship over the years, and it was Perkins who first asked if the five-time AFC champion coach would oblige and visit Hattiesburg.
"He's a good friend and more than happy to help out."
