After more than a year of
dredging the South Sewage lagoon, the sludge removal is still ongoing, but Hattiesburg
city officials believe soon the rotten odor smell in East Hattiesburg will improve.
In January, the city hired a
second dredging company, Merrell Brothers, to assist L and A Contracting and
speed up the process.
The $6,000,000 project is
taking longer than estimated since the amount of sludge is more than what the
city expected.
"We're hoping the first couple of weeks into April we'll be done,"
said City of Hattiesburg Director of Engineering, Bert Kuyrkendall. "We will have
removed about 11,000 dry tons of sludge."
The sludge is said to have been caused by USA Yeast,
who is currently constructing a new system in their plant to treat its wastewater before
putting it into the sewer system.
