(CNN) – No matter how you prepare them, eggs remain a popular staple of the American diet. But over the last few decades, physicians have warned people to limit their egg intake, especially if they have high cholesterol.

Now nutritionists are saying one whole egg can be part of our diet.

"Study after study over the past several decades have confirmed that eggs are not associated with coronary heart disease," Dietician Katherine Tallmadge said.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the average healthy individual should limit daily cholesterol intake to 200 milligrams a day.

One egg has 186 milligrams of cholesterol, but it also has 13 essential vitamins and minerals and is packed with plenty of protein and antioxidants, which are good for the heart and only has 70 calories.

"They're high in protein, lupine and Zeaxanthin which are important for eye health. They're high in colene, important for brain health, and their high in vitamin D, important for the bones and important for the immune system," Tallmadge said.
