Southern Miss football starts Spring Practice

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Spring practice indeed. Temperatures in the 70s, spotless skies, a brand new head coach and a new attitude all certainly signified what many are hoping is a re-awakening for the University of Southern Mississippi football team.

Todd Monken, the Golden Eagles' newest head man delivered exactly what he promised after the university introduced him in December- renewed energy within the team and the white lines. From the moment the first horn blew, Monken sprinted from sideline to sideline, yelling and shouting the whole way through. At times it looked like he wanted to strap on the pads.

The word the first-year, and first-time head coach has preached since the start is "fun;" something Southern Miss didn't enjoy a lot of during last year's 0-12 campaign.

"(Coach Monken) always talks about how we don't get paid to play college football and if you're not having fun, why do it," said senior cornerback Deron Wilson,  "So it's like, we just need great body demeanor, and I think we had that today.

"Day one was a good day. We won today."

One down, 14 more to go.
