The following is a news release from William Carey University:
Dr.
Scott Hummel has been appointed executive vice president and provost at
William Carey University. He is currently the vice president for
advancement and church relations, professor of religion, and director of
the Carey Scholars program. Dr. Hummel helped build the honors program
and he leads the Carey Scholars to England every other year. He traveled
to Linyi, China to help establish WCU's exchange relationship with
Linyi University. He has also led mission trips with Carey students to
India and Peru.
Dr. Hummel earned a B.A. in biblical studies from
Carey and while there, he received both the Greek and Hebrew awards. In
addition, he received the Jenkins-Chastain citizenship award, which is
the highest student award given by the college. The Petal Rotary Club
sponsored Hummel as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, which allowed him to
study at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1988-1989. In 1991 he
earned a Master of Divinity with biblical languages, and in 1996 he
earned a Ph.D. in biblical backgrounds and archaeology from Southwestern
Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.
Before coming
to Carey, Dr. Hummel served as associate professor of biblical studies
and chair of the department of biblical studies and Christian ministries
for 10 years at Le Tourneau University in Longview, Texas. While at Le
Tourneau University, he developed and taught physical settings of the
Bible in several countries, including Israel, Greece, Turkey, Egypt,
Jordan, and Italy. He served as the president of the Teaching Faculty
Organization in 2002-2004. In 2008, he received the Robert Selby
Teaching Scholar Award from Le Tourneau University. He has presented
papers at academic conferences and published numerous articles in the
Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible, Biblical Illustrator, and Baker Bible
Dictionary.
Dr. Hummel was the president of Longview Greggton
Rotary Club, served on the Longview Rodeo Board, and the Cultural
Activities Commission for the City of Longview. He is the
president-elect of the Rotary Club of Hattiesburg, and serves on the
boards of R3SM and the United Way of Southeast Mississippi. Dr. Hummel
also serves on the Leadership Council of the American Cancer Society in
Hattiesburg. He is currently the interim pastor of Pleasant Grove
Baptist Church in Wayne County. Dr. Hummel has been married to Starr for
22 years and they have three daughters: Lauren, a student at Carey, and
Rachel and Julia, who attend Oak Grove schools.
