MSU takes fifth straight win against Southern Miss

PEARL, MS (WDAM) - Rightfielder Hunter Renfroe went 3-for-5 at the plate, blasted a three-run homer, scored two runs, and batted in six, leading the Mississippi State University baseball team to its fifth straight win over the University of Southern Mississippi.

Renfroe's two-run double off the centerfield wall in the top of the first inning put the Bulldogs up 4-0 before Southern Miss ever had a chance to respond. The Golden Eagles didn't touch the scoreboard until the fourth inning, but by then, they already trailed 7-0.

Isaac Rodriguez crossed the plate off a Blake Brown single to score USM's only run of the inning. Two innings later, Renfroe struck again, this time with the long ball. His three-run homer in the top of the sixth put the Bulldogs up 10-1.

Southern Miss threatened to make things interesting immediately after. A Tim Lynch RBI scored Chase Fowler, Brown followed with an RBI to bring home Rodriguez, Mason Robbins singled scored lynch, and one throwing error later, fans at Trustmark Park were watching a 10-5 game with the bases loaded.

It quickly turned around for the Black and Gold after Breck Kline grounded into a double play, and the inning later ended when Fowler struck out.

Southern Miss falls to 7-9, while Mississippi State improves to 18-2.
