MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Madison police have arrested WLBT Meteorologist Eric Law.

According to the Madison Police Department, Law, 32, is accused of having inappropriate contact with a girl under the age of 16. He is charged with two counts of sexual battery and two counts of gratification of lust.

Madison police Lt. Eddie Lawrence said the investigation started in Rankin County, but authorities handed the case over to Madison police.

"They had contact. They had legitimate contact initially and then, again, some alleged inappropriate behavior. We're going to take every step to make sure justice is served," Lawrence said.

Law appeared in Madison Municipal Court Thursday afternoon. Judge Dale Danks set bond at $50,000 per count, for a total of $200,000. Law was released on bond after the court appearance.

"Eric has no criminal history. This is a new experience for him. He's a good kid, and he's just trying to follow what the court has asked him to do," said Law's attorney Matt Baldridge. "We are not even sure what the exact allegations are at this point. We know what the charges are, but that's the first substance of information we've been given."

"More information will be forthcoming and once we know what the exact allegations are we will know how to respond," Baldridge said.

Law has been a meteorologist at WLBT since 2004.

"Eric Law has been suspended until further notice," said WLBT News Director Wilson Stribling.
