A Tylertown man is charged with animal cruelty in connection to that suspected puppy mill in Walthall County. Sheriff's officials say James Thornhill, 72, turned himself in Tuesday and was released on his own recognizance. Laurel businessman and former firefighter Ken Keys opened his mayoral campaign office on Wednesday.
The Yellow Jackets came out of the gates on fire Saturday morning in Jackson. Bassfield shot 63.3% in the first half on its way to a 70-64 win over Coahoma AHS in the 2A boys semifinal.
Bassfield shot lights-out in the first half, converting 63.3% from the field, to take a 47-29 halftime lead. The Yellow Jackets cooled off in the second half, and Coahoma cut into the big lead late in the game. However, despite being outscored 24-6 in the fourth quarter, Bassfield held on for the 70-64 win. The Yellow Jackets advance to the state championship game for the first time in school history.
Bassfield was led by sophomore Jamal Peters with 18 points and ten rebounds. Three other Yellow Jackets scored in double figures, including Desmond Hammond and Trayrell Wright with 14, and Ron Logan with 13. Logan also had 13 rebounds.
Bassfield moves on to face Baldwyn in the 2A state championship game on Thursday at 8:30 pm.
