Ala.- DaRon Bell's three point basket at the
buzzer propelled #12 William Carey University to the title game of the 2013
Southern States Athletic Conference tournament as the Crusaders defeated
Emmanuel College, 63-60. With the win WCU secures an automatic bid to the 2013
NAIA National Tournament.
The Crusaders
will take on Faulkner University tomorrow night at 7:30 pm in the championship
game.
Early on
things looked bleak for the Crusaders as Emmanuel opened the game with a 10-4
run and went on to extended the lead to 24-13 with 6:39 to play in the half.
Carey finally got going as Donzedrick Smith scored six straight points that
sparked a 21-8 run that was capped off by Fernando Garcia's tip in at the
buzzer to put WCU 34-32 at the half.
The Crusaders
led for the duration of the second half until Emmanuel used a 9-2 run to tie
the game at 60 with the less than a minute. Bell had an opportunity to put WCU
with 29 seconds left but his shot was off the mark however Emmanuel's was
whistled for a travel and Bell made them pay. With less than 7 seconds to play,
Bell dribbled off a high post screen and let loose a three ball from the right
wing that hit nothing but net as time expired.
Bell led WCU
with 15 points. Donzedrick Smith, Guy Payne, and Kelvin Nixon each finished
with 11 points.
