Gov. Jan Brewer has issued a state of emergency in response to a 150-foot section of U.S. 89 south of Page that buckled and sank four feet.
Brewer's office said the declaration will help the Arizona Department of Transportation get repair reimbursement from the Federal Highway Administration.
ADOT said the Feb. 20 event might have been caused by a "geologic event."
ADOT closed the highway between the U.S. 89A junction near Bitter Springs and the State Route 98 junction near Page, between mileposts 523 and 546. ADOT said they've started some repair work but it's unclear how long the highway will be closed.
