Phase One of the Hattiesburg Downtown Traffic plan is nearly complete.
Hattiesburg Director Of Engineering Burt Kuyrkendall met with the Hattiesburg Downtown Association Thursday morning to provide a review of the plan.
Phase One will include the redesign of some of the downtown streets, signage, and on-street parking. Under the plan Front and Pine Streets will be converted from one way to two-way streets. The traffic lights at both intersections will be replaced with four way stops. The traffic lights at the intersection of Front, West Pine, and Hardy Street will also be eliminated and the intersection will be converted into a roundabout.
Kuyrkendall says the changes will slow down traffic, create a more pedestrian friendly environment, and add 80 to 100 on-street parking spaces.
The project will be opened to bids in March. Construction is expected to begin in May or June and is expected to take about nine months.
