PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A Phoenix meat shop suffered massive damage and a "person of interest" was hospitalized after a suspicious fire early Thursday morning.

Phoenix firefighters were greeted by flames up to 100 feet high when they arrived at MJ Carniceria and Restaurant at 1217 W. Hatcher Rd. just after 3:30 a.m., said Larry Nunez of the Phoenix Fire Department.

Firefighters also found a person with a fractured leg on the ground near the building, Nunez said.

"He apparently told someone he was trying to look for someone in the roof area," Nunez said.

He added that firefighters were not sure in what area of the restaurant the person was injured or whether he worked there. He was taken to a nearby hospital, Nunez said.

Firefighters were forced to back out of the building by heavy smoke and flames, and the roof collapsed just after the firefighters got out, Nunez said.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation, Nunez said.

No other information was immediately available.
