The Humane Society of the United States has named the Southern Pines Animal Shelter a top ten Emergency Placement Partner for 2012.
Emergency Placement Partners are local agencies that work with the Humane Society to provide ongoing care and find permanent homes for animals saved during large-scale rescue missions.
In 2012 Southern Pines staff worked with the Humane Society on several occasions to rescue animals in abused situations. One of the largest was when they assisted in the rescue of more than 70 mistreated-treated dogs and puppies from a puppy mill in Stone County. Many of the dogs rescued that day were taken back to the shelter and received the medical care they needed and were adopted out to good homes.
"If we weren't doing so well with our adoptions and transports and getting the animals we have in our shelter out we would have no room for emergency placement animals," said Katherine Sammons, Spas Operations Manager. "Our increase in adoptions and the wonderful work we do transporting animals up north opens up room where we can step in and help when needed."
'Southern Pines was the only organization in the state to be listed as one of the ten best by the HSUS.
