Mississippi funding hit hard if sequester takes effect

SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) -

The White House released a new state-by-state report Sunday evening on the devastating impact the sequester will have on the U.S.

According to the report, Mississippi stands to lose millions of federal dollars if no deal is done to avoid those cuts.

For education that would mean a loss of more than $5.4 million in federal funding for primary and secondary education. That would put 80 teachers' jobs at risk and cut funding for 20 schools across the state, according to the administration.

Programs helping children with disabilities would lose $6.1 million. The White House said head start services would be eliminated for around 1,600 kids in Mississippi.

According to the report, the Department of Defense would also have to furlough 9,000 civilian employees. Army base funding would be cut by $2.8 million in our state and Air Force operations would see a $4 million cut.

This is just a small portion of the seven page report outlining the state wide and national impact of the cuts.
