USM journalism professor emeritus dies

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A professor emeritus at Southern Miss has died.

Dr. Gene Wiggins was part of the university faculty since 1973 – where he taught journalism and mass communication. He was director of the university's school of communication for two decades.  Previously, Dr. Wiggins worked as a journalist for the Hattiesburg American.  He also served as public information officer for the U.S. Air Force.

Dr. Wiggins died at his home Thursday.  Funeral arrangements are pending.  Dr. Gene Wiggins was 69.
