Smoke alarms save lives and the Jackson Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal's Office have free alarms available for Mississippi homeowners.
Jackson firefighters are installing the smoke alarms in homes for free. Unlike the older models, the new models have a ten year battery life. It's also very difficult to take the battery out and if it is removed it can't be used for any other device.
Smoke alarms for the deaf and hearing impaired are also available for free. The alarm is placed between a box spring and mattress. It goes off when the regular smoke alarm is signaled.
"It vibrates and once the alarm vibrates and of course you have to have both of them to send the signal, the person is able to see the light and they awaken and recognize that they know there's something going on," said the Jackson Fire Department's Chief Arson Investigator Greg Travis.
If you live in Jackson and want more information on the free smoke alarms, call the Jackson Fire Department at 601-960-1399. If you live outside of Jackson, call the State Fire Marshal's Office at 888-900-7414.
