A strong storm system will make for a fairly busy day across East Texas weather wise. Showers and thunderstorms will begin to develop shortly after 7 AM across much of the area. A few of these storms will be severe with large hail and gusty winds. Areas from Palestine to Rusk to Center and south have a risk of isolated tornadoes as well. This is where the warm front should set up later this morning as the thunderstorms begin to move in.
The air mass across East Texas right now is very cool and stable. However, as a warm front begins to move north, the air above this cool surface will be force upwards causing thunderstorms to develop. Temperatures in the mid levels of the atmosphere will be very cold allowing for the development of large hail, possible up to golf ball size.
The northward moving warm front will bring in warmer air to our far southern counties. It is here, mainly south of an Elkhart to Rusk to Center line, where thunderstorms could produce an isolated tornado or two. In addition to a tornado threat in these areas very strong winds are likely with the strongest storms.
This activity will move out of East Texas early this afternoon and the skies will actually become partly sunny in our western counties. Stay with KLTV and KLTV.com for all the latest weather development. If you have not done so yet, please go to your smart phones app store and download the KLTV weather app. It will be a useful tool throughout the severe weather season.
