Southern Miss falls 10-8 at Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, AL (WDAM) -

It took a five-run fifth inning and three insurance runs in the eighth for the University of Alabama, but it was enough to hold off a late charge from the University of Southern Mississippi. The Golden Eagles fell for the first time in 2013, losing 10-8 to the Crimson Tide.

Tide catcher Brett Booth stole the show, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, putting a sour note in an otherwise solid first start pitcher Jake Winston. The freshman struck out six and gave up only two hits and one earned run before what proved to be the decisive fifth.

Down 7-1, Southern Miss (3-1) pulled to within two runs after the top half of the eighth, but gave up three more in the bottom frame. The Eagles return home for the Southern Miss Invitational, where they'll meet East Illinois on Friday for a 6:00 pm start at the Pete.
