FAA investigating fatal plane crash near Poplarville

POPLARVILLE, MS (WLOX) -

The FAA is in Pearl River County trying to figure out why a small plane crashed, and its pilot died. That crash was Sunday afternoon near Poplarville, between Highway 11 and Interstate 59.

According to investigators, the pilot was 50-year-old Ron Desantis of Tucson, Arizona. They've been told Desantis was trying to land his ultra-light aircraft, but witnesses say a gust of wind tipped the plane. One of its wings clipped several trees, and the aircraft slammed into the ground.

Desantis died at the hospital. No one on the ground was hurt.
