(RNN) - Country singer Mindy McCready died Sunday night in Heber Springs, AR. She was 37.

The Cleburne County Sheriff's Office confirmed in a news release that McCready died of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound.

McCready was found dead on her front porch, the same place where David Wilson, her longtime boyfriend and father to her second son, is believed to have committed suicide just weeks ago, reported the Associated Press.

According to several news reports, the death hit McCready hard.

"David was my soulmate; he was a caregiver and guiding hand to our sons, Zander and Zayne," McCready said in a statement issued after Wilson's death.

And in the weeks after the incident, McCready was court-ordered to put her sons in foster care and enter drug and alcohol rehab.

As news of McCready's death spread, fans and celebrities tweeted their condolences to the much-troubled but much-loved star who influenced so many.

"My heart goes out to Mindy McCready's family," tweeted LeAnn Rimes Cibrian. "I knew her well. It's a horribly tragedy. May peace be with her sons."

"So so sad to hear about Mindy McCready. Had some fun times with her back in the day. Lets respect her memory and wish her soul peace," tweeted country star Terri Clark.

The popular star also called for people to show compassion for McCready, who reportedly suffered from severe drug and alcohol addiction.

"I hope our society shows compassion and realizes the severity and reality of mental illness, and addiction," Clark wrote.

McCready was born on Nov. 30, 1975 in Fort Myers, FL, and graduated early from high school so that she could begin her singing career.

At 18, she moved to Nashville before recording five studio albums: Ten Thousand Angels (1996), If I Don't Stay the Night (1997), I'm Not so Tough (1999), the 2002 eponymous titled Mindy McCready and I'm Still Here (2010).

Ten Thousand Angels went on to be certified as double-platinum and produced four hit singles, including Guys Do It All The Time, which hit No.1.

McCready's success was peppered with scandal, drug addiction and arrests, fodder for the tabloids.

Baseball star Roger Clemens was reported to have had an affair with the singer. Clemens denied the claims that the relationship was sexual, even filing a defamation suit, but admitted knowing McCready since she was 15. Clemens released a statement in 2008 saying, "I have made mistakes in my personal life for which I am sorry."

Her tumultuous personal life also included the arrest of her ex-boyfriend Billy McKnight for attempted murder in 2005 after beating and choking her.

A sex tape of McCready was sold by Vivid Entertainment in 2010.

McCready sought treatment a few times for drug addiction, even appearing on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew in 2009 after a string of incidents with police.

The singer was arrested for various drug charges throughout her life, including trying to purchase OxyContin with a fake prescription, as well as driving with a suspended license, identity theft, violating probation, battery due to a fight with her mother, and resisting arrest.

She attempted suicide three times previously, twice due to drug overdoses, and has sought treatment at various facilities, including recently being committed to a facility for an evaluation for alcohol-abuse and mental-health issues.
