HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Andrew Pierce gave up only six hits and struck out nine in six innings of work, while the Golden Eagles produced two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to seal a 5-2 opening-day win over Missouri.
Southern Miss (1-0) provided the first score of the game when Isaac Rodriguez singled to bring home Connor Barron. After a scoreless second, the Tigers evened things up with a Keaton STeele RBI, but Chase Fowler singled to bring home both Rodriguez and Bradley Roney in the sixth to make it 3-1.
The Eagles added two more insurance runs from Rodriguez and Blake Brown which made the lead it 5-1. Sean Buchholz allowed three hits and one run in the top of the ninth, but preserved the win for the Black and Gold.
First pitch for game two of the three-game series will be Saturday at 2.
