United Way D.R.E.A.M needs to rebuild following tornado

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The D.R.E.A.M Center on Hutchinson Avenue in Hattiesburg took a direct hit from the tornado Sunday.

Staff and volunteers were out Thursday morning sifting through the rubble to see what could be salvaged.

The building is a total loss with the whole back end leveled. Most of the items inside the building were damaged beyond being salvageable.

Dream Executive Director Linda Vasquez says they fortunately have been able to work temporary locations to meet.

"Parkway Heights is going to let us start up at their facility for a week and then the Jaycees are going to let us use their building for a couple of weeks," said Vasquez.

Vasquez added an emergency meeting is scheduled for Friday to work out where the organization goes from here.

East Marion volleyball finished 20-5 a season ago, falling to the eventual state runner-up Resurrection in the first round of the playoffs. The Eagles are hungry for more in 2017. "They have that fever," said sixth-year East Marion volleyball coach Mandell Echols. "They want to take [Resurrection's] place and end up winning the championship."
