On February 12, 2013, following the cancellation of the annual Philadelphia International Cycling Championship, Linus Bike extends its full support of its replacement, the Philly Cycling Classic. The Philadelphia International Cycling Championship has been a staple in Philadelphia tradition for nearly thirty years.
According to The Times Herald, U.S. Rep. Bob Brady stated that the new 2013 race will be called the Philly Cycling Classic. Brady commented that the event is being organized by a team of sports event professionals, cycling advocates and local business and community leaders.
At the end of January the Pro Cycling Tour stated that the Philadelphia International Cycling Championship would not occur this year due to “rising city costs and loss of sponsors,” reports the article.
“It is a shame that such a spectacular event as the Philadelphia International Cycling Championship has seen its end after nearly thirty years,” comments city bikes manufacturer Linus Bike representative China Reevers.
According to The Times Herald, “the annual summertime event, held in the city since 1985, featured a 156-mile championship held over a 14.5-mile course from the Benjamin Franklin Parkway through the nearby community of Manayunk.”
Reevers comments on the new race as a positive response to the cancellation of Philadelphia’s age old tradition. “This new race should not be seen as a replacement but as homage to the age old tradition of cycling in the city of brotherly love. Linus Bike hopes that all members of the biking community step forward and ride in the event. The cycling community has shown what it is capable of by organizing this new event.”
