Harrisonville man returns $1,200 in cash found on street

HARRISONVILLE, MO (KCTV) -

If you found more than a $1,000 cash just laying on the ground, what would you do?

A Harrisonville man did the right thing, and instead of keeping it, he found the person who lost it.  However, one won't believe what he got in return.

Kyle Osborn, 29, pays close attention to details.  It is his job.  He owns and operates the Easy Scrape auto shop in Harrisonville.

His shop sits right across the street from the Sutherlands hardware store where they know him by name.  And on Wednesday, as he was leaving the store, something caught his eye.

"I was walking and I saw an envelope with money. I didn't know it was money yet.  I picked it up and realized what it was," Osborn said.

The envelope had $1,200 cash. He could have easily put it in his pocket.  Instead, he went back inside to search for the person who lost it.

"A guy realized his dad had an envelope.  He said my father had some.  We go up and ask him if he lost anything and he looked around his pockets and realized he did,"  Osborn said.  "I reached in my pocket and handed it to him.  He looked at me and he said, 'I hope it's all there.'"

Osborn couldn't believe the response he got.

"I was kind of shocked. I walked away, that was all I could do. A simple 'thank you' would have been nice," he said.

Osborn put what happened on his Facebook page and those who heard about it, including workers at the Sutherlands, thought it was rude.  So they wanted to make things right in appreciation for his honesty.

Sutherlands gave him a gift basket of items including a $50 gift card and a big 'thank you.'

Osborn said the real lesson is don't judge a book by it's cover.

"I think older people just tend to observe people the way they look and not who they are. Just because someone with a beard, tattoos and dirty doesn't mean they are bad people," he said.

His mom was so proud of her son for the inspiring act of kindness and honesty she was the one who contacted KCTV5 about this story.  He didn't really want any publicity for his actions.
