Many taxpayers began receiving federal income tax refunds in their bank accounts as the Internal Revenue Service began issuing direct deposit tax refunds last week.
Last year, the IRS issues 9 out of 10 refunds to taxpayers in less than 21 days and they expect to do the same again this year. It is possible, though, that some tax returns will require additional review and take longer.
The IRS has a tool that can be used to track the status of you refund. The Where's My Refund website can be used to find out when your return is received, when it is approved and when it has been sent to your bank account.
In order to use the tool, you will need your social security number, filing status and refund amount.
Taxpayers will be able to track the status of their refund within 24 hours of e-filing a return or four weeks of mailing a paper return.
