USM hosts Second Annual Bullying Symposium

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Office of Professional Development and Educational Outreach at The University of Southern Mississippi hosted their Second Annual Safe Schools and Communities: Building Resistance and Resiliency to Violence, Defiant Groups and Bullying Symposium on Friday.

The symposium featured sessions led by Southern Miss psychology professor, Dr. Christopher Barry and Dr. Katia Patterson, a nationally-recognized training expert and author in school improvement strategies and integration of social-emotional and academic learning.

Dozens of teachers, school administrators and school counselors reviewed how they could support victimized students cope with bullying and help bullies change their negative behavior.

The symposium covered topics on gang awareness, school safety, and creating safer schools for LGBTQ youth.
